Switch off the lights, switch on the senses

Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit Hotel’s Dine In The Dark is a unique dinner in complete darkness with blindfolds on.

The special dining experience, where proceeds benefit the Foundation for the Blind in Thailand, is held at the hotel’s gastro lounge, BarSu. A guide for the evening provides a brief introduction to the dining concept before offering a choice of four, four-course set menus, including Asian, Western, vegetarian and a special surprise option.

Before dinner, guests are invited to leave all luminous watches, mobile phones or any sources of light, before being led to the private dining room in complete darkness.

Once seated, it is time to get out of your comfort zone and adjust to dark. Along with fellow diners, guests must carefully begin to explore the table in front of them and remember the positions of everything, from cutlery, plates, glasses, salt and pepper shakers to table decoration. They are challenged to draw and retain a mental picture of the table. Though, there may be some disorientation at first, excitement soon takes over.

When the first dish is carefully served by a team of visually-impaired waiters, guests have to be more alert and maximise their senses. Exploring the food on the plate is a challenge that stimulates conversation and competition between friends. The questions, surprises and laughter flow. Without vision, taste sensations become confused and diners have to guess what they are eating. The incredible experience amplifies the senses as guests are forced to rely completely on smell, taste, touch and sound.

After the unforgettable dinner, they are led back to the illuminated lounge where their chosen menu is presented again. They can compare the dishes with what they imagined.

Designed to awaken people’s senses, Dine In The Dark or DID was created in Zurich, Switzerland, by a blind Swiss socialite and trendsetter. The unique concept expanded into fine dining restaurants and social clubs.

Dine in the Dark is available from Monday to Saturday from 6.30pm. The private dining room at BarSu can accommodate 20-24 guests. Dinner is priced at 1,450 baht++ per person for food only.
